MISSION STATEMENT

“To Provide comprehensive quality Ophthalmic, Medical Treatment and the latest Health Care Amenities free of cost to as many under privileged people as possible and to train as many doctors as possible for this noble cause”.

We at Vivekanand Netralaya have dedicated our selves in giving light (eye sight) to those who have lost it due to some medical disorder like cataract and we do this for the poor (underprivileged)  who cannot afford to go through the procedure. We proudly say that we do it for free. We conduct regular surveys to all the near by and distant villages in and around Belgaum district in search of such unfortunate people. We get them to Vivekenand Netralaya in our vehicle do the necessary treatment and then happily drop them back with their eyesight restored.

We have now completed 5 years since the starting of our project of performing free cataract surgery with lens implantation. We are proud to say that we have completed more than 5000 cataract surgeries under this scheme. Kudos to Dr. Madhuri Dixit and her team who have worked relentlessly to make this happen. We have also bagged the best NGO award for the district. All of this has been possible because of the hard work of the staff and the management of Vivekanand Netralaya.

In 2004, a few like-minded people from diverse fields in Belagavi Karnataka India , came together with a noble vision to render health care services to the underprivileged people in and around Belagavi. Thus ….“ Priyadarshini Eye , healthcare and research foundation “ came into existence with able leadership of eminent heart surgeon Dr M D Dixit from Belagavi .

Community Eye care program was launched
with initial technical support from Lions NAB hospital Miraj ( under the banner of Vivekanand Netralaya ) and Bhartesh Education trust.

Why Eye care program ?

India being home of almost one third of worlds blind population , blindness is the major social health issue having greater economical impact .
Services are polarised & resources are limited .90 % of underprivileged blind people reside in rural areas Fortunately more than 78% of the blindness is avoidable … Cataract is the main cause of this avoidable blindness .Non governmental voluntary organisations play a major role in bringing awareness & facilitating blindness eradicating programmes .

In 2003 survey was conducted in an around Belgaum to find out incidence of cataract and Khanapur taluka was found to have highest incidence of avoidable blindness due to cataract amongst Belagavi district ( 7.23%) . Eye care services were not reaching in remote villages of Khanapur.

There was a dire need of eye care .
We decided to focus on this area .
Goals & objectives were set .
Frame work was created .
A team of volunteers lead by Dr Madhuri Dixit ( Chief Ophthalmic Surgeon & Managing trustee ) conducted regular cataract screening camps .
Needy , underprivileged blind people brought to the base hospital in Belagavi .
Cataract operations are done with intraocular lens implantation . Patients are sent back to their villages next day . A team of volunteer doctors & ophthalmic assistants visit them after a week & then a month .The surgeries are totally cost free for patients .
The cost is totally born by contributions from generous donors . Mr P G Badkundri ( trustee & program coordinator ) & Mr N G Gadgil ( trustee & treasurer ) have played & are playing significant role in reaching out to people & institutions for contributions towards this noble cause .

Since the programme has started ….we have done more than 11,000 cataract surgeries & reached more than a Lac people for screening .

It’s a continuous mission … to eradicate avoidable blindness ..  we have expanded our areas of work , even in other underserved areas in Belgaum .
